Come to Egypt to discover a world of wonders.
Capital
Cairo
Location
Located in North Africa, bordering the Mediterranean to the north, Israel and the Red Sea to the east, Libya to the west and Sudan to the south.
Surface and population
Egypt covers 1,000,000 km2, of which only a third is cultivable and is inhabited by a population of about 102 million people who live basically on the green line watered by the Nile. The most important cities are Cairo, Alexandria, Suez, Port Said, El Minia, Assiut, Sohag, Qena, Luxor, Aswan, Marsa Matruh, El-Mahalla El-Kubra, Tanta, El Mansura and Damietta.
Economy
The main economic resources are cotton, the agro-food industry, oil, natural gas, and above all tourism and income from the passage of ships through the Suez Canal.
Religion
75/80% of Egyptians are Muslims, 20/25% Coptic Christians and Catholics and the remaining 1% are small minorities, mainly Orthodox, etc.
Language
Arabic is the official language. Tourists can get by in English at the various tourist sites. There is also a minority that speaks French and it is not unusual to be understood in Spanish.
Currency
The currency is the Egyptian pound. The exchange rate is around 19/20 pounds for each euro (April 2022). The euro can be exchanged in banks without any problem and is even accepted in many shops as currency of payment. Credit cards are usually accepted in hotels and shops, although some of the Nile cruise ships do not accept them. There are ATMs throughout the tourist route.
When to go
Due to its climate, the ideal time is between October and April. In summer it is quite hot, but it is bearable because the climate is very dry.
Gastronomy
You can taste international cuisine without leaving the hotels themselves. However, if you want to try Egyptian cuisine, you will have to resort to some spices and spices. The Egyptian dish par excellence is beans, followed by salads, meats, rice, etc. You should not forget the delicious Arabic sweets either.
Shopping
From the moment you arrive in the country, there are endless opportunities to buy. There is a great variety of items such as gold, silver, brass, alabaster, ceramics, carpets, tapestries, cotton, papyrus, etc. It is forbidden to take antiques out of the country.
Bargaining
For some it is an art and for others a real pain. In most tourist shops it is customary to haggle over the price, and you can lower it to less than half the first price offered by the seller.
Tips
Also called «bakshish», none is obligatory, but in reality it is, since many people live exclusively from it. In restaurants it is usual to leave about 10% of the total bill. Other common tips are to drivers, porters, cruise ship crew, guides, etc.
What to visit
There are many interesting places in Egypt. However, everything will depend on the time available. If you choose an 8-day program, it is usual to spend three days in Cairo and take a cruise on the Nile, between Luxor and Aswan or vice versa, for 5 days. If the stay is extended by a few days, we can spend a couple of nights on the beaches of Hurghada or Sharm El Sheik, both on the Red Sea. And if what we want is to go deeper into the country, we should extend the stay according to the places we want to visit. Among others we cannot miss: the Pyramids of Giza, Memphis and Sakkara, the Egyptian museum, the Citadel of Saladin, the Khan El Khalili bazaar, etc., in Cairo. Heading south, mandatory stops are Luxor, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Aswan, to continue to the grandiose temples of Abu Simbel. Finally, we would have to see the Sinai Peninsula, with the Monastery of Saint Catherine, Alexandria and the cities of the Suez Canal.
Documentation
A passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of departure is required. The visa can be processed at the airport of entry to Egypt or online using this link.
Drinks
The water is drinkable, but it is advisable to drink bottled water. As it is a Muslim country, alcoholic beverages are only available in hotels, restaurants and some establishments with special permission.
Vaccinations
No vaccinations are required.
Time
One hour more than in Spain from October to March.
Electricity
220 volts, 50 Hz.
Taxis
It is recommended to arrange the fare before getting in. In Cairo they are black and white. Hotel taxis are more expensive, although they offer the advantage that the drivers speak some English. The Uber platform is also available.
Photography
In most museums it is forbidden to take photos with a flash, although you can bring your camera in for an additional fee.
Clothing
In summer it is advisable to wear light cotton clothing in light colours. The nights are usually cool, especially in desert areas, so it is a good idea to bring a jacket or windbreaker. In winter it is advisable to wear warm clothing, similar to what we wear in a normal winter in Spain. For visits it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes, a hat and sunglasses.
Public safety
Contrary to what many people think, Egypt is very safe. It does not matter where or when we choose to go out, we will rarely feel a sense of danger. Even if we ever suffered some mishap, it would be the Egyptians themselves who would come to our defense.
Distances between Cairo and other cities
