With you we will visit two of the most emblematic cities of the Region of Murcia: Murcia capital and Cartagena.
We will start by visiting CARTAGENA, one of the most historic cities in Spain.
The city was founded by the Carthaginians in the 3rd century BC on an Iberian settlement at the time when the young Hannibal Barca was preparing to rule and years later to challenge the Roman Empire as no people had achieved before (II Punic War).
As already intuited from its own name, Cartagena was an important city of antiquity, both for the Carthaginians and for the Romans, who gave it the name of Cartago Nova from which its name evolved to the current one.

The Roman theater of Cartagena is one of the largest in Spain. It was built in 44 BC. by Emperor Augustus and discovered by chance in 1988.
One of the most outstanding remains of the Roman settlement in Cartagena, it had a capacity for 6,000 spectators, ranking after Sagunto as one of the largest in Hispania. In the year 44 B.C. the city reaches the rank of Roman colony, receiving the name of Colonia Vrbs Iulia Nova Carthago (C.V.I.N.C), Emperor Augustus begins with an ambitious plan for the Romanization and urbanization of the city, endowing it, in addition to the theater, with a great forum. The theater is dedicated to Lucius and Julius Caesar, the emperor’s grandsons, whose names can be read on two large gray marble lintels over the east and west entrances. For its realization, limestone, marble, sandstone and red travertine were used for the columns. The white marble that is still preserved comes from Greece and was probably carved in workshops in Rome before being brought to the city.
What to do in Cartagena?
Take a walk through the port of Cartagena, visit its natural park and some of its most interesting beaches in the area where you can go scuba diving, go up to the Castillo de las Concepción with the panoramic elevator and glimpse the views of the city, visit the Roman theater from Cartagena and its Roman ruins (comparable to that of Mérida), discovering Isaac Peral’s submarine, visiting the City Hall or its old town, are some of the things to see in Cartagena.
The gastronomy of Cartagena is popular for its traditional cuisine and the quality of its raw materials, fundamentally based on seafood and farm products. You will have a hard time choosing between its great gastronomic offer!
In addition, going for snacks in Cartagena is one of the most established customs and best valued by tourists. Among its tapas routes is the great tradition in many of its bars in the old town of serving a free tapa with a drink or paying a really cheap price.
