With the experience of International VIP Valencia we guarantee you’ll make the most of your visit to the city of four cultures, as we’ll visit the city’s most important sites (it was a very important city as early as Roman times).
Zaragoza’s history dates back more than 2,000 years and boasts numerous vestiges of bygone eras. Already inhabited in the Bronze Age, its Iberian origins date back to the 3rd century BC. Over the centuries, it has been settled by Romans, Muslims, and virtually all the civilizations that have occupied the Iberian Peninsula.
It was the capital of the Kingdom of Aragon (which, when united with the Kingdom of Castile, gave rise to present-day Spain) and the seat where all the kings of the Crown of Aragon were crowned for hundreds of years.
Today, Zaragoza is the fifth-largest city in Spain by population, combining modernity, tradition, and history with elegance and pride. It is located on the banks of the Ebro River, the most abundant in Spain, and its waters reflect the beauty of its two cathedrals (the Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar of Zaragoza and the Seo or Cathedral of the Savior of Zaragoza) and the city itself. Its Mudejar architecture is a World Heritage Site; the impressive Basilica of the Pillar houses frescoes by one of our most famous and renowned painters, Goya; and the Plaza de la Hispanidad is a place you’ll immortalize with many photos. It will be a very special day!
You’ll be impressed by the Basilica of El Pilar, located in the gigantic and marvelous square of the same name. It’s enormous, elegant, yet light and delicate. Its eleven domes and four bell towers make it seem even larger. It’s Baroque in style, and the Marian temple (dedicated to the Virgin Mary) is the oldest in Spain, and possibly the world. Inside, we can see frescoes by none other than Goya!, from both his youth and his later years. The basilica is dedicated to the Virgin of Pilar, the patron saint of Spain. In fact, October 12th is Hispanic Heritage Day (the day Columbus arrived in America), and we dedicate this very day to the Virgin of Pilar. Mark this day in your diary because it’s a holiday throughout Spain (you won’t have any classes!). Tradition tells that the Virgin (when she was still alive) appeared to the apostle Saint James, who was preaching in these lands. The Virgin, standing next to a pillar (a column), asked him to build a church on that very spot. The first records of this church date back to the 4th century AD.
Today, the basilica houses this pillar, and on it stands a figure of the Virgin that will surprise you with its size: it measures only 38 cm! Her cloak almost covers the pillar.
On the walk, we will admire several Mudejar monuments that will not leave you indifferent, for they are World Heritage Sites for a reason. Mudejar art is the medieval architectural style resulting from Christian and Muslim coexistence on the Iberian Peninsula, so this is likely the first time you’ve encountered it. You’ll be amazed! For example, the beautiful Aljafería Palace. Built in the 11th century by Muslims, it passed into Christian hands in the 12th century, when it was completed in the Mudejar style and housed the majestic throne room of the kings of the Crown of Aragon. Today, this palace is the seat of the Government of Aragon. Other Mudejar buildings include the Cathedral of El Salvador (the Seo), which harmoniously combines Gothic and Mudejar styles, the Dean’s House and Arch, the Zuda Tower, and more.
The city borders the mighty Ebro River. Rivers in Spain are not usually very large, so Spaniards are always impressed by its width and majesty. Several bridges cross it, such as the 15th-century Stone Bridge with seven beautiful arches, and the modern Third Millennium Bridge, which connects to the more futuristic part of the city.
Throughout the day, we’ll enjoy Aragon’s famous cuisine! If you enjoy trying new dishes, you’ll have the opportunity to savor ham from the nearby Teruel mountains and try countless tapas not common in Valencia, such as migas (breadcrumbs), ternasco (one of the best lambs, a breed native to Aragon), chilindrón (a delicious tomato and pepper sauce to accompany chicken), and any of the many «a la pepitoria» (a type of stew). Pork products, such as sausages and loin, are typical of the area, but if you’re not a meat lover, you can try bacalao a la Baturra (cod) or bacalao al ajoarriero (cod with garlic), which are also typical and finger-licking good. The local wines have designations of origin, so it’s a good idea to take a Cariñena or Somontano wine back to Valencia as a souvenir.
We’ll also have free time to stroll around, wander the streets (a stroll through the old town is worthwhile) and do some shopping before getting back on the bus and returning to Valencia. What are the typical souvenirs that everyone buys when visiting Zaragoza? For Catholics, there are medals and pendants of the Virgin of Pilar. And for those with a sweet tooth, there are adoquines, giant candies of various sizes. Some can weigh up to 500g. They are wrapped in a drawing of the Virgin of Pilar, and inside we read the lyrics of a «jota» (a typical Aragonese song that is also danced). An example of an Aragonese jota:
«When you hear the jota sung
and you are far from Aragon
it is a dart that gently penetrates
the heart.»
